Explore Stig Rossen’s Biography

When Stig Rossen burst into the Danish public’s consciousness in February 1988 with his appearance at the Danish Eurovision Song Contest, few would have predicted a long-lasting career in the entertainment industry. That same year he released an album (Kærlighed – og alt det der), which featured his Eurovision entry Vi danser rock og rul. But the record also hinted that the young singer from Kolding was capable of more than soft pop ballads; the term heavy pop was frequently used in the studio during the recording sessions.

The album was followed by a nationwide concert tour with the band Fenders, after which things went quiet around Rossen. He was, in fact, fully immersed in his acting studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (1987–1990).

The 1990s had barely begun when Stig had his breakthrough in England. He was cast in the choir of Les Misérables, and after just three months he was offered the lead role of Jean Valjean.

In 1991, the album Starry Starry Nights was released — his first collaboration with the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra. The album surpassed all expectations, reaching Platinum in just four months, and was followed by a completely sold-out concert tour.

His partnership with the orchestra and English conductor David Firman continued on the next two albums, The Impossible Dream (1993) and Live in Concert (1994), which achieved Gold and Platinum status respectively.

By 1994, Rossen was ready for a new artistic challenge. Together with American gospel star Lillian Boutté, he launched a gospel project that included a televised concert featuring a thousand-voice choir. Around the same time, he also began performing with his own concert show, backed by Svenn Skipper’s five-piece band, where over the next two to three years he explored a more intimate and “stripped-down” concert format.

In 1995, Rossen entered negotiations with record company Polygram, and after a ten-month tour of Asia and South Africa with Les Misérables in 1996, he began working on what would become the 1997 album Letters of Love.

Produced by Niels Lan Doky, this ambitious project presented Rossen in a new, more contemporary sound. Letters of Love also marked the first signs of an international recording career, as one of the songs, Miracle, went straight to the top of the charts in Thailand, where it remained for 12 weeks — three of them at number one — ahead of acts such as Wet Wet Wet and Celine Dion.
